Arguably, the most useless role in Australia’s political system is that of the Governor-General, who is a figurehead position with ceremonial and constitutional duties.
While ordinary Australians are suffering through the worst cost-of-living crisis in generations, the incoming Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, has been awarded a 43% pay rise to $709,000 a year to compensate her for a lack of commonwealth entitlements, such as a military pension.
“Where, in the past, a Governor-General has been the recipient of other Commonwealth entitlements – such as a military pension – the annual salary has been adjusted accordingly”, a spokeswoman for Assistant Public Service Minister Patrick Gorman said.
